  • What? How can it be?  Session 1 of HSJI today ends today. Thank you for a wonderful week of learning about, practicing and celebrating high school journalism. This morning you have an 8:30-10:30 a.m. small group session followed by our awards program from 11 a.m-noon. If your family is attending our awards session in Willkie Auditorium, please have them park in one of the lots near Spruce or behind Willkie and meet you to walk over to Willkie. Move-out will begin after the closing session.
  • During your small group session this morning, please complete our workshop evaluation. We appreciate your feedback, which helps us plan next year’s Institute.
  • If you are staying between sessions, even for just one night, you must attend a meeting in the counselors’ office at 2 p.m. tomorrow. The only exception is for students enrolled in the Sportscasting mini-workshop.
  • Students enrolled in the Sportscasting mini-workshop: please stop by the counselors’ office between noon-12:45 p.m. to pick up materials for your session. Your first session will start at 1:30 p.m. in Franklin Hall Commons. Please meet teaching assistant Jared Rigdon just outside the Counselors Office at 1 p.m. He will lead the group to Franklin Hall.
  • The counseling staff asks you to use the checklist below as you move out today:
    • Make sure your room is clean and your furniture is back in its original position.
    • Check all drawers, shelves, and wardrobes for personal belongings.  Don’t leave anything behind.
    • Tie up your trash bags and place them in the trash bins that the custodial staff will place on your floor.
    • Find your floor counselors and check out with them.  They will collect your card and double-check that everything in your room is taken care of.
    • If someone other than your parents is picking you up, please stop by the counselors’ office before you leave.
    • If you are taking a early or late shuttle to Indianapolis airport from Bloomington, make sure you are completely checked out with time enough to meet your shuttle at Willkie north building. If you are scheduled to catch the shuttle at another location, please make arrangements with your floor counselor ASAP.
    • If you are staying between sessions, even for just one night, you must attend a meeting in the counselors’ office at 2 p.m. today.

We’ll post today’s award winners on the HSJI site early next week. Please stay in touch. We wish you a successful school year!

  1. Labs have been busy, busy the last couple days, and we’ve received nothing but compliments on your thoughtful questions during interviews and your sincere efforts to do journalism well. For example, reporting students have interviewed the director of IU Admissions; the head of nursing at IU Health Center; and the head coach of the women’s soccer team. Innovative storytelling interviewed the director of facilities for IU Athletics and used 360 cameras to develop stories about Assembly Hall. Documentary Film learned techniques from professional filmmaker Susanne Schwibs. We can’t list all the exciting work you’ve been doing, but we’re proud of what you’ve accomplished so far. Keep up the good work!
  2. Sadly, tomorrow will be our last day with many of you.  Here are some things you should do to make check-out go smoothly:
