Diving into new opportunities

High school student becomes a leader through her passion for swimming.

As boredom can strike any high-schooler, Ruth Cronin incorporates her hobbies into new jobs and opportunities for herself. Ruth has continued her passion for swimming as she will continue to swim on her school team her junior year at Zionsville Community High School. Ruth has been swimming since she was seven and has turned her hobby into a job and volunteer opportunity for herself.

“Zionsville has a lot of really good state swimmers and sometimes it can be overwhelming to be on a team with such competitive swimmers but I’m mostly just there to have fun and stay in shape,” Cronin said.

Swimming has always been an important part of Ruth’s life since she was a kid but now as a teenager she has found a way to advance her skills and turn it into a competitive part of her life.Ruth has devoted many parts of her daily life to swimming in different ways.

“We have morning practice, after school practice and Saturday morning practice so it can be really tiring at times but it is also a lot of fun,” Cronin said.

Ruth pushes herself during and outside of practices to become a better swimmer and keeps a positive outlook while doing it. Ruth does not only swim for her school and state team. Recently, Ruth has started spending time teaching swimming lessons as a summer job.

“I love being able to share my passion with others by teaching kids how to swim,” Cronin said.

Ruth has also found interest in a non profit called Swimming for All. This non profit organization gives kids living with disabilities the opportunity to learn how to swim. While this has been life changing for the kids, it has also had a big impact on Ruth’s life.

“Through this program I’ve gotten to work with lots of kids with autism and watching them become more comfortable in the water has been such a pleasure. In addition of being an instructor this year I will be in charge of running the social media and promoting the non profit which I am excited about,” Cronin said.

Ruth has taken a small hobby like her love for swimming and has changed it into many new life experiences that she can use to be a better swimmer but also a better leader in her community going forward.
