Monday — Media Literacy Best Practices with Renee Hobbs

8:30-9 a.m.: Check-in
9:15-11:30: Opening/keynote session

3:30-5: Media making lab (TAs available to assist)

Tuesday — News and Information Literacy (nonfiction texts)

8:30-9:25 a.m.: Casual coffee talk in the Commons
9:30-10:15: Keynote: Determining the Good, Bad and Ugly of the Internet
10:30-11:30: Literacy Opportunities: brainstorming ways to integrate news/info literacy into your curriculum by addressing NAMLE goals — access, analyze, evaluate, create and communicate – using media in all their forms
1-2:15, 2:30-3:15 p.m.: Break-out sessions:

  • Thinking critically about images
  • Recognizing opinion and propaganda
  • The power of storytelling — narrative non-fiction and podcasts
  • Pulling back the curtain on strategic media (public relations and advertising)
  • Free and inexpensive digital tools for making media
  • Media law and ethics crash course for educators

3:30-5: Media making lab (TAs available)

Wednesday — Entertainment Media Literacy

8:30-9:25 a.m.: Casual coffee talk in the commons
9:30-10:15: Keynote: How to “Read” a Film
10:30-11:30: Literacy Opportunities: Exploring media literacy organizations, standards, and materials
1-2:15 p.m.: Media making lab (TAs available)
2:30-4: Media Literacy Fair: Participants present, share and discuss media they’ve made during workshop
4:15-4:30: Workshop wrap-up: Complete workshop evaluations, distribute PGP certificates
