Both the High School Journalism Institute and Indiana University define “multicultural” as people of different cultures, languages, ethnicities, races, religions, socio-economic status or gender.
In that spirit, High School Journalism Institute offers Multicultural Scholarships for students interested in investigating media careers, improving their journalistic skills or sampling campus life at Indiana University by attending HSJI.
The program is designed to introduce you to possible media/journalism careers while you experience life on the Indiana University campus. During the High School Journalism Institute, you gain important knowledge and skills as you work with successful publication advisers and media professionals.
If you are registering for a 5-day workshop, and you will be a high school sophomore, junior or senior during the 2020-2021 school year, you are eligible. You must submit a grade transcript from a high school counselor or administrator, complete the application form and write an essay between 300 and 500 words long titled “Journalism’s Challenges.” The transcript and essay must be attached to the online application and submitted no later than Monday, April 13, 2020.
If you receive a scholarship, your tuition and room will be paid for, as well as a $100 meal (debit) card, which you will receive at registration. If you plan to spend more than $100 on food, you’ll need to bring extra cash to supplement the card. Please read more info about meals here. You will be responsible for travel to and from Bloomington and for any spending money you might want to bring.
Once on campus, you will be expected to follow all rules given to you by the workshop director and your counselors. Students who drive to campus will be required to park their cars for the entire session and will not be able to drive them. You will attend classes each day from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. You will also have assignments in the evening and some classes as well. You will be expected to be in your residence hall by 10 p.m.
