Student Housing
While attending the IU High School Journalism Institute, you’ll live much like college students in on-campus housing. You will have a roommate, and you’ll be supervised by counselors who are college students and, often, Media School majors, too.
Housing
Women and men will use separate areas of Spruce Hall Residence Center. This fully air-conditioned dorm is on the east side of campus and within a six- to eight-block walk of most HSJI large- and small-group sessions. Roommate requests will be accepted if both students request one another on the online registration form.
Meals
HSJI students will receive a $50 prepaid meal card, which is included in the workshop registration fee. Students who want to purchase additional meal cards may choose this option on the online payment form. However, prepaid meal cards are good only at residence hall food courts. No refunds are available for unspent meal card balances.
Students will need more than $50 to cover meals for the 5-day session. Options are to purchase an extra meal card or to bring cash, personal debit or credit cards to supplement the meal card.
Most HSJI workshops are held in Franklin Hall, which is on the opposite side of campus from the dorm and Wright Food Court. We have found that students often opt to have lunch at nearby restaurants instead of walking back to the food court. Here’s a list of several nearby restaurants. They do not accept the IU meal card, so be sure to bring extra funding for these options:
- BuffaLouie’s (wings, burgers, salads)
- Cafe Pizzaria (pizza, stroms, sandwiches)
- Dagwood’s (subs, wraps, soups)
- Jimmy John’s (subs, sandwiches)
- Noodles & Company (pasta dishes, soups)
- Potbelly (sandwiches, soups)
- Qdoba (Mexican)
- The Village Deli (homestyle options, breakfast-all day)
- Which Wich (subs, sandwiches)
The primary dining facility for HSJI will be at the Wright Residence Hall. Check out this link to food options at the Wright Food Court. For those who need to follow a strict diet or have food allergies, this food court has several options. If you have questions, please feel free to contact the IU dining services dietitian, Rachel Noiret, at 812-856-5851.
